Ground Source Heat Pumps

For sustainable, cosy homes

Are you looking for a highly efficient, long-lasting heating system that can reduce your energy bills and carbon footprint? A ground source heat pump is an innovative solution that uses the stable, ambient warmth of the earth to heat your home and water year-round.

It’s an incredibly reliable and sustainable alternative to traditional boilers, providing constant warmth regardless of the weather above ground.

The Benefits

Part of the heat pump will live outside of your house. This part often looks like a slightly larger air conditioning unit that you might see on buildings when you go abroad. They typically sit on the ground and will often be attached to one of your exterior walls.

A ground source heat pump offers a range of powerful, long-term benefits for your home and finances.

  • Exceptional Energy Efficiency: The temperature underground remains consistently warmer than the air, allowing GSHPs to operate with a higher efficiency than other systems.

  • Government Grants Available: Like with air source heat pumps, you may be eligible for a government grant to help with the installation costs.

  • Reduced Carbon Emissions: By tapping into a consistent source of renewable energy, a GSHP can drastically cut your home’s carbon footprint.

  • Long-Lasting Performance: GSHPs have a much longer lifespan than traditional boilers or even air source heat pumps, often lasting 40-50 years with minimal maintenance.

  • Low Operating Noise: The primary unit is installed inside your home, and the outdoor components are buried underground, meaning the system operates almost silently.

Ground Source Heat Pump explained

Ground source heat pumps get their energy from the ground.

They can heat water for taps, radiators and underfloor heating.

This method is more efficient but can be more expensive and needs suitable land near your house.

What do air source heat pumps look like and where will they fit in your house?

Part of the heat pump will live outside of your house. This part often looks like a slightly larger air conditioning unit that you might see on buildings when you go abroad. They typically sit on the ground and will often be attached to one of your exterior walls.

How It Fits in Your Home

To an extent, you can work with the space you have because there are two types of installation:

Horizontal Installation, which requires a large area of land (roughly 50m² of ground per kilowatt of power) for the trenches to be dug about one meter deep.

Vertical Installation,  where a borehole (as little as 20cm wide) is drilled deep into the ground (up to 120 metres) to house the pipes. This requires much less surface area and is a good option for urban properties.

The indoor heat pump unit is typically the size of a tall fridge or a boiler. It can be fitted in an airing cupboard, utility room, or garage. Our experts can help you find the best fit for your property.
