Draught proofing

For sustainable, cosy homes

Draughts can make your home feel colder, less comfortable, and more expensive to heat by letting warm air escape and cold air in. Proper draught-proofing helps seal unwanted gaps around windows, doors, floors, and other openings, reducing heat loss and lowering energy bills while improving comfort and efficiency. For homes with stubborn or hidden leaks, our professional draught-busting service can identify and fix even hard-to-spot draughts, giving you a warmer, more energy-efficient home.

By sealing up the unwanted gaps and cracks that let cold air in and warm air out, you can dramatically improve your home’s energy efficiency, reduce noise, and save money on your heating bills.

The Benefits

Part of the heat pump will live outside of your house. This part often looks like a slightly larger air conditioning unit that you might see on buildings when you go abroad. They typically sit on the ground and will often be attached to one of your exterior walls.

Draught-proofing is a quick fix that can have significant benefits:

  • Lower Energy Bills: Draught-proofing windows and doors alone can save you around £40 a year. Sealing an unused chimney can save an additional £15.

  • Increased Comfort: By stopping cold air from entering your home, you will eliminate chilly draughts and make your living spaces feel warmer and cosier.

  • Reduces Noise: Draught-proofing also helps to block out unwanted outside noise, making your home quieter and more peaceful.

  • Quick and Cost-Effective: Many draught-proofing solutions are inexpensive and can be installed quickly, offering a fast return on your small investment.

  • Protect Your Home: By preventing uncontrolled airflow, you can also reduce the risk of damp and mould caused by moisture fluctuations.

What do air source heat pumps look like and where will they fit in your house?

How It Fits in Your Home

How It Fits in Your Home Draught-proofing is a versatile solution that can be applied to almost any home, from old properties with sash windows to modern homes with new doors.

  • Windows: Gaps can be sealed with self-adhesive foam strips or brush strips.

  • Doors: You can use brush strips for the bottom of the door and self-adhesive seals for the frame. Don't forget to install a brush or flap on your letterbox and a cover on your keyhole.

  • Floors and Skirting Boards: Gaps can be filled with flexible fillers to prevent cold air from seeping in from below.

  • Chimneys: If you have an disused fireplace, a chimney balloon or cap can stop warm air from escaping.

Energy efficiency:

Draught-proofing is a cost-efficient and simple way to make your home more energy-efficient.

When a professional draught-proofs your windows, doors, and floors, you can cut your carbon emissions by 215 kg annually. That’s about the same as taking a small car off the road for a year!

How does draught-proofing increase energy efficiency?

Draught-proofing fills gaps and cracks in your home, so any heat stays inside where it's needed. This means you don’t have to use your heating as much, which can:

  • Save energy.

  • Lower your bills.

  • Reduce your carbon footprint.

The cost to install draught-proofing can vary and is based on a few factors:

You can draught-proof your home yourself or have an expert do it for you.

On average, it costs around £250 for a professional to draught-proof an entire home. If you do it yourself, you will just need to pay for the right tools.

Is draught-proofing right for my house?

Draught-proofing is ideal for homes with cold draughts coming through doors, windows, and floors. It’s an easy way to keep your home warm and snug without spending a lot of money.

Approximate cost saving:

  • The size of your home.

  • Where you are draught-proofing.

  • Your energy prices.
