How does a home EV charger work?

A home EV charger is perfect if you have an electric car or a plug-in hybrid. It lets you charge your car’s battery at home, so you don’t have to go to a public charging station.


Here’s how it works:


  • Charge at home: You can plug in your car and charge it whenever you need it.

  • Save money: Charge your car when electricity is cheaper, usually at night. This can cost about half as much as filling up a petrol or diesel car.

  • Help the planet: Electric cars are better for the environment since they have zero tailpipe emissions. You can even run your EV charger with clean solar power.

You can choose from slow, fast, or rapid chargers depending on how quickly you want to charge your car.

Can I get an EV charging point on my street?

As detailed below EV charging points for streets is dependent on where you live.


Permitted Development: Most EV charger installations fall under permitted development, meaning no formal planning permission is required if conditions such as size and placement are met.


Exceptions: For listed buildings or properties in conservation areas, planning permission may be necessary to preserve historical or architectural significance.

Can solar panels be used to charge an electric car?

Yes, you can use solar panels to charge an electric car. Solar panels generate electricity from sunlight, which can be stored in a battery or fed directly into your home's power system. If you have an electric vehicle (EV), you can use the solar-generated electricity to charge it, either by connecting the EV to the solar-powered home charging system or using a solar carport. This can reduce your reliance on the grid, lower electricity costs, and reduce your carbon footprint. However, the size and efficiency of the solar panel system will determine how much energy it can generate and how quickly it can charge your car.

How does an EV charger increase energy efficiency?

An EV charger increases energy efficiency by letting you charge your car when electricity is cheapest, usually overnight. This means you use less energy for each mile you drive compared to a petrol or diesel car. You can also pair your charger with solar panels to run it with clean energy.

Approximate cost saving:

Charging a medium-sized electric car at home can cost about half as much as getting petrol for a regular car. Here’s why:


  • Charging an EV costs about 8p for each mile you drive.

  • Getting petrol for a regular car costs around 13p to 17p for each mile.

  • Some electricity providers let you charge your car for even less, like 3p per mile, especially if you charge it overnight.


This means charging your EV overnight can save you at least 10p per mile. That’s about £100 for every 1,000 miles you drive.


You can save even more by using solar energy to power your EV charger. An EV powered by solar can save you around £1,950 each year.

However, there are specific restrictions in York regarding EV charging points. Is an EV charger right for my house?

An EV charger is a great choice if you own or plan to buy an electric car or a plug-in hybrid. It lets you charge your car at home, so you don’t have to use a public charger.


If you have a garage or driveway, you can easily install one. If you live in a terraced house, you might not have enough wall space or parking access for the charger.

Energy efficiency:

Switching to an electric vehicle is a great way to lower your carbon emissions. This is because:

  • A small electric car produces around 15 tonnes of CO2 throughout its lifetime.

  • A small petrol or diesel car produces around 32 tonnes of CO2 throughout its lifetime.


This is a saving of 17 tonnes of CO2 each year, which is about the same amount of CO2 an average UK home produces in 19 months!
