Overview:
In April 2022, Fulford residents Andy and Denise decided to transform their 1930s semi-detached home. Their goal was to reduce carbon emissions and improve comfort without fossil fuels. They redesigned their living space to include a new kitchen and an extension featuring a downstairs toilet and shower room, all with a focus on energy efficiency. They were motivated by rising energy prices, wanted to reduce their carbon footprint and also needed to replace their broken gas boiler, so they opted for several solutions including internal wall and ground-floor floor insulation, an air source heat pump and a Mechanical Ventilation and Heat Recovery system.
Process and Challenges:
Andy and Denise were able to spread the renovations over a period of time and stayed in the house throughout most of the process, taking opportunities for further home improvements such as re-wiring as the project developed. They took advantage of expert advice throughout the process which helped to coordinate the different tradespeople involved.
Results:
Andy and Denise have significantly reduced their carbon footprint and are now saving money on their energy bills. The much improved insulation means that their home is warmer and draught-free and the Air Source Heat Pump and mechanical ventilation are very quiet and provide easily controlled temperatures and a comfortable and healthy home. The value of their home has also increased, thanks to all the new energy-efficient solutions and the other renovations.
