In 2019, the City of York Council, one of YorEnergy’s partners, declared a climate emergency and set an ambitious goal for York to reach Net Zero by 2030. Private housing in York accounts for 32% of the city’s total carbon emissions, so YorEnergy was set up by our consortium of partners to support residents in making their homes more energy-efficient.
What is Net Zero?
Reaching Net Zero means balancing the greenhouse gases we add to the atmosphere by taking the same amount away. A great way to reduce our carbon emissions is to make our homes more energy-efficient by insulating them or installing home energy solutions such as solar panels or heat pumps. Changes like these bring us closer to Net Zero while also keeping the heat in and our energy costs down!
Making it easier for you to join the Net Zero movement
YorEnergy is grounded in research conducted by our partners: City of York Council, Brightsparks Agency, Energy systems Catapult and Abundance. As part of the study called Accelerating York’s Net Zero Transition, Brightsparks listened to over 600 York homeowners to find out how to best motivate them to install home energy solutions. This gave us a great understanding of the barriers that stop York residents from purchasing energy-efficient solutions and allowed us to design YorEnergy with them in mind.
The study found that York residents don’t often know where to learn more about home energy solutions and ones that would be suitable for their budget and homes. Many also expressed a need for support during the installation process and access to trusted suppliers.
