Debbie and Mike: Greener, quieter and cosier home thanks to energy-efficient upgrades

Overview:

Debbie and Mike, long-time York residents, wanted to transform their 1980s detached house into a more sustainable, comfortable living space. They were driven by environmental concerns and a need for a quieter, cosier environment, so they opted for a full retrofit (an installation of multiple energy-efficient solutions). In their case, it included insulation, solar panels, batteries, an air source heat pump, mechanical ventilation with heat recovery and high efficiency appliances.

Process and Challenges:

Initially, Debbie and Mike faced a few challenges with the planning permission, due to neighbour concerns about potential noise from their heat pump. They kept engaging with their neighbours throughout the process, even showing them working heat pumps to demonstrate their low noise levels to allay those concerns. Seeing the successful project has led to some neighbours also deciding to upgrade their own homes.

Results:

Debbie and Mike now live in a more comfortable, enjoyable space and have noticed significant savings on their energy bills. Those who previously raised noise concerns are happy with how quiet the solution is and have offered a few neighbourly high-fives to celebrate Debbie and Mike’s successful installation.

Mike and Debbie’s insights:

Debbie: “My home is now a much more sustainable, quieter, comfortable space where I can relax without worrying about my energy costs.”

Mike: “Expert advice is vital when choosing solutions to ensure they complement each other and give long-term benefits.”
