Overview:
Andrew and Henrietta have recently moved to a conservation area in Fishergate, York, where they bought a non-listed, semi-detached, Victorian house. Their house was so cold and draughty that the previous owners avoided using some of the rooms, and the couple decided to transform it into a more comfortable, sustainable living space. They wanted to give their children a warm, cosy home whilst lowering their energy bills and reducing their carbon footprint. They decided to install a house battery, new windows, insulation, underfloor heating, solar panels, and a mechanical ventilation heat recovery system.
Process and Challenges:
Andrew and Henrietta started their home energy-efficiency journey before the launch of YorEnergy. Early on they engaged a local supplier, who offered expert advice and subsequently installed the solar panels and house battery. For much of the work, the couple took a hands-on approach, installing insulation and the ventilation system themselves following advice from specialist suppliers. This meant that although the installation took longer it was easier to manage the disruption by doing a room at a time.
Following a protracted search for a builder, a larger building project at the rear of the house meant they decided to stay with family nearby while that work was happening. The renovation brought parts of the house up to modern standards meaning it is now easy to heat and stays warm.
Finding the right products to use in their house and the right suppliers to trust took a significant amount of research over a number of months. The YorEnergy accredited supplier marketplace aims to make finding providers much easier.
Results:
Andrew and Henrietta now enjoy a healthier, more sustainable home. They have experienced significant savings on their energy bills and managed to maintain the period features of their home such as the sash windows and cornicing. With the draught and cold gone, they can now enjoy all the rooms in their home together with their children.
Andrew's insight:
‘’Finding the right partners to make energy-efficient changes to our home was so important. The changes we’ve made have transformed the house and how we live in it. Overall, we estimate we have halved the heat lost from our house.’’
